As planned by the stellar team behind creating Australia’s Space Agency, this May 2018 Federal Budget will include a specific line item for the Agency’s first few years. Technical competence and excellent leadership (Head of Agency: Dr Megan Clark), bipartisan support, a mandate and authority together with this multiyear budget and planned international collaborations should carry it forward beyond the next election, which is the real litmus test.
Final report of the open submissions together with the public consultations that were held in every Australian city last year will be released soon. Keep an eye on this page.
It is anticipated that the Administration HQ will be in Canberra and the Engineering Centre will be in Adelaide to start with for financial and practical reasons.
The next key step will be to finalise legislation changes started in 2014 and completed in 2016 that will complete a much needed rewrite of the dreadful Space Activities Act 1998. This newly drafted bill was completed in late 2017, will be introduced to Parliament soon and is expected to be passed in 2018.
